New Store: Sylvie and Shimmy

In need of one of a kind fashion, shoes, or accessories? Enjoy supporting small and local businesses? Look no further than Sylvie and Shimmy in Toronto's equally as unique and antique hunter friendly Parkdale Village. Styleground was lucky enough to attend the grand opening on June 1st 2013 and boy were we blown away.

Their website states that they attempt to create "...an atmosphere of ones dream closet... transcend a comfortable and cozy shop where patrons will hang out and provide an interactive environment", and boy do they hit the nail right on the head. Their decor is mainly a collection of thrifted gold and genuine antiques from Caroline Sylvester (Sylvie)'s very own grandmother.
From the moment you walk in, you're enveloped in floral, lace, and you'll exclaim "cute!!" more than you ever have before, I guarantee it!

The items they carry are a combination of handpicked items from local designers, and shipments from Korea. The prices are all very affordable and absolutely worth supporting young creative talent. One of the great things about this store is that they also turn you onto other local businesses' (who's products they carry), such as the trendy MoonRox for jewelry, and the adorable graphic tees from Crywolf. Both very unique, both home grown, and both just a taste of what Sylvie and Shimmy have to offer.

And have we mentioned how ridiculously cute the tags are??

We've visited Sylvie & Shimmy on numerous occasions and will show our purchases on a separate post. Stay tuned! :)

Tailor ~ Pajama Shirt Recon

Yoohoo! Mila here.

I found this old shirt I used to use as PJ's and I thought "Hey, why not change this to something I can wear outside of the house!" Plus I saw a tutorial on something like this on YouTube by Threadbanger (check 'em out!). Here's how the shirt looked like on me before the recon. It was big, baggy, long, and the neckline was practically choking me.

And here's the after. All I did was shorten the length, enlarged the neckline and got rid of the fringes.

This was my first shirt recon and I'm planning on doing it again. Maybe a different style or not depending on my mood and level of energy. So this one isn't the greatest. Other than that, I had fun doing this :D

Cheers,
M.

Tailor ~ Pink Dress

Hey there peeps.

Since I now have more time on my hands to dedicate myself on projects and tasks other than school, this is what I've been up to. I stopped sewing after I graduated high school and, though I didn't hate sewing per se, I didn't love it either nor was I a professional on the task. Here's what I've accomplished.

Pattern I used by Simplicity No. 3503, Dress A

The layout and cutting it was a pain in the back
Front

Back

Accessorized with a thick, woven, black belt from Costa Blanca, black Aldo pumps, and a black tank underneath.

Yes, it's not perfect. The seams are wiggly, the hemming is sloppy, the raw edges are untrimmed, the gathering is uneven, the straps are misaligned, and it's just plain boring. I even bought myself a pair of pinking shears and it still didn't turn out the way I want it to. Oh well. I think it was a pretty good shot after, like what, four years give or take a couple of months. I'll try to improve my sewing skills in the future.

Let's Get Some Shoes

My love for shoes is only second to makeup and third to rings... if that makes sense. The great thing about shoes is that they protect your feet, duh! And they adorn your outfit no matter how plain it is. A pair of pumps can dress up a plain t-shirt and jeans look and a pair of ballet plats can casualize a party dress (like how I made up my own words?).

Shoes come in different shapes, sizes, styles, colours, and textures. They convey a persons personality or boost up your confidence. It can add height, aid with posture, and make you walk like you own the world. Shoes are just as diverse as the world's population! Now do you see why I'm in love with shoes?!?

I noticed this season booties are in the game. Although, I thought booties were always in the game. But either way I'll be talking about boots this fall season and the shoes that I'm loving! Which are boots... I love how boots can dress up a casual outfit or sex up a simple dress. And there are so many different kinds of boots! Knee high stiletto boots give a sexy appeal, military-like boots give a butt-kicking appeal and furry wedged hiking boots give a Tomb Raider in the Arctic appeal. :D

I find the wedged heel to be more comfortable during the winter time, especially if you have to take the bus to school. It stabilizes your foot so you don't wobble a lot but it still helps with your posture like ordinary heels.

You might think that kitten heels would do the same as wedged heels, but I heard that they may be worse than ordinary high heels. I can't reference where I heard this from and if you know any information on this, Id really like to know if it's true. But either way, it doesn't stop me from wearing kitten heels. Plus it hurts less when standing for long periods of time.

And finally the flat shoes/boots/heels. These are the kinds that people assume are the comfiest out of all types of shoes. Unfortunately, that's not true for me. Because I have an arched foot, if I walk too much in flats or flat boots, my feet start to ache. I understand that many people out there feel more comfortable in flats. I, personally, like how easy it is to slip on a pair of flats rather than lacing up my boots or wearing socks. I sometimes would wear flats when I know I'll be standing for a long time but even then, it still tends to hurt my feet. I know there are insoles to solve this problem but I'm too lazy to bother with it (hopefully, like most people).

Well that's all I have to say about shoes. I realize it's not really targeted to the season but that wasn't the intention in the title :P It's more on the shoes I'm loving... and own. Please note that the photos posted above are from my own collection and I'm unable to tell you the prices or where I purchased them because I simply forgot. If you really want to know, don't hesitate to contact me or comment below and I'll try really  hard to remember for you. Other than that, I'm not gonna bother sweating the small stuff for now.

Mary Queen of Shops

Hands up if you've seen this show! Mary Queen of Shops is a BBC2 program (so it should air on BBC America/ has aired on BBC Canada) starring retail guru Mary Portas as a savior to failing shops all over the UK. Mary started out just doing window displays in a shop called Harrods, and she now has a fashion marketing company called Yellowdoor, travels the world as a famous and successful retail consultant, has a television show (well, two. Mary Queen of Frocks airing next month of Channel 4. edit:// there's also Secret Shopper, so lets just say that Mary has a shit ton of shows), a book, as of August has her own STORE, and is currently touring with her shoe collection from UK brand Clarks Shoes. Jeeze, anything this woman can't do? If you are aware of her show, you know that Mary is on a mission to pump some much needed life back into the British high street ("With consumer confidence weakening for the third straight month in August, economists caution that retail sales will continue to wane in coming months." via Wall Street Journal), and she's giving it her all.
Mary's own line is on the 3rd floor of House of Fraser on Oxford street, and has a niche audience of women around their 40's to cater  to the disappearing venues for older women to shop for classic pieces at affordable prices and in a wonderful setting (from the sounds of it, its going to be closer to a lifestyle shop then a clothing store. Everything from housewares to wine will be available for purchase. I highly recommend checking out the telegraph article linked below for the details and her vision.)

Alright alright, enough of the talky talky, here are some pics of her first collection. Do you think she hit the nail on the head?

And now Mary's Autumn/Winter 2011 Clarks shoe collaboration!

nice to thick sturdy heel-- will be more comfortable then a thinner heel and will keep you steady on ice and other A/W weather surprises.
colour blocking is a huge trend.
gorgeous colour, loving the jewel tones. haha i think my nails are that colour right now actually.
texture completely ruined these for me, and wedged booties are my favourites. le sigh
relatively low and thick heel, tiny bit of a platform. everyday glam for the practical woman.
oh that colour again, and doesn't that fabric just scream autumn.
these are wonderful, I'd love them for myself.

So, do you guys think its all age appropriate? Is this step in the right direction for the high street? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
I'll leave you guys with some rules from Mary making getting dressed in the morning easy as pie. (via telegraph)
1) Avoid dressing like a teenager; 2) Edit your trends; 3) Work with your proportions; 4) Keep it low maintenance; 5) Don't buy crap
